ELIZABETH, NJ - Musicians and singers with and without disabilities will perform in a very special cabaret-style show to help raise funds to support the programs and services of Community Access Unlimited (CAU).
Performers from CAU's Academy of Continuing Education (ACE) enrolled in the Music Appreciation or Theater and Performance programs, members of the CAU Rocks band and other members of the agency will be performing a variety of music, including Sister Sledge's "We Are Family," the music of Stevie Wonder and hip-hop in two acts.
"Music and performance is such a wonderful opportunity for people with disabilities to grow and develop confidence," said Marguerite Modero, director of music at ACE. "When they take the stage with performers without disabilities they can be judged on their talents rather than their disabilities.
"Over the years CAU has significantly expanded the opportunities for our members to engage in music and performance, from our annual musical productions by the CAU Community Players to joint concerts with music majors at Kean University to shows by our CAU Rocks band. This will be a more relaxed atmosphere, cabaret-style, that will allow for even more freedom of expression within a community ."
There also will be a cupcake contest – or Cupcake Wars – in which the creations of competing teams will be judged on presentation.
The event takes place on Thursday, Feb. 15, at CAU's auditorium at 80 West Grand Street in Elizabeth, at 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Tickets are $10. Space is limited so reservations are recommended. For reservations contact Cara Pavia, director of fundraising, at 908.354.3040, ext. 4376 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
