JERSEY CITY, NJ - At least they waited until after the Fourth of July fireworks were over before starting. Important information for rail commuters.

PATH stations at Exchange Place and the World Trade Center (WTC) will close at 11:59 p.m. this Friday, July 6, and remain closed until 5 a.m. Monday, July 9, to allow crews to transition to a new signal system being installed as part of the federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) program. according to a Port Authority press release.

PATH has partnered with the MTA to provide a free 2-trip MetroCard at the 33rd Street station for diverted PATH riders using city subways and buses only; these cards will not work on PATH turnstiles. The MetroCards issued will only be valid until 5 a.m. Monday morning. They can be obtained from a PATH ambassador before exiting the turnstiles at 33rd Street station.

Starting at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, July 13, PATH will begin a series of 15 consecutive weekend closures of the Christopher, 9th, 14th, 23rd and 33rd street stations along the 33rd Street line, with the exception of Labor Day weekend. Free 2-trip MetroCards will be available at the WTC station only for the duration of the 33rd Street line work, usable only for the weekend they are distributed

The PTC weekend testing work is scheduled to run through the end of October, and PATH is on track to become the first transportation agency in the region to complete system-wide installation of PTC by December 31, 2018, as mandated by the federal government.

Closure details and updates are available through www.panynj.gov/PATHplanner.

During the 33rd Street line closures, there will be direct train service from Hoboken to the WTC on Saturdays. On Sundays, Hoboken-WTC riders will use the normal weekend schedule, which requires a transfer at Grove Street for the Newark-WTC train. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will be cross-honoring passengers between Exchange Place, Newport, and Hoboken.

The Hoboken PATH station will remain open during all of the affected weekends, except for three Sundays when it will be closed due to signal-related work: September 16 and 23, and October 14.

Once completed, the benefits for riders from PTC will be a safer, more efficient and reliable PATH system. The new technology will also contribute to increased train frequency and capacity.

The technology is an integral part of PATH’s comprehensive Automatic Train Control (ATC) program, which also includes improved communication between trains through Communication Based Train Control (CBTC).
