Two Elizabeth Men Sentenced to 27 Years in Robbery Turned Murder Case

ELIZABETH, NJ--Two men that were charged in an attempted robbery nearly three years ago in Elizabeth that resulted in the death of a Brooklyn man have been sentenced to 27 years in prison each, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Monday.

Ali Garner, 31 and Keon Lewis, 32, both of Elizabeth, will not have the possibility of parole until they serve at least 85 percent of their sentences under terms set forth by state Superior Court Judge Robert Kirsch.

On September 16, 2014, patrol units from the Elizabeth Police Department were called to the area around Jacques and East Jersey streets in Elizabeth and found 41 year old Mamuka Chamiashvili, who had been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Union County Homicide Task Force, the Elizabeth Police Department, and the Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit said that the victim was responding to an online ad for a Mercedes-Benz SUV for sale in the city, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Albert Cernadas Jr. After the victim had completed a test drive of the vehicle, a physical altercation began and gunshots rang out, Cernadas said.

Lewis was charged in October of 2014 after a weeklong investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office, the Elizabeth Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Garner was arrested by members of the Union County Homicide Task Force the week before. The two defendants pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree aggravated manslaughter in June 2017.

One other man charged in connection with the case, Larry Jones, 35, of Elizabeth had previously pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree robbery. He is expected to be sentenced later this month, the prosecutor’s office said..
