ELIZABETH, NJ - The Elizabeth Police Department has launched a Citywide Fireworks Taskforce to address the ongoing issue of fireworks that have been going off nightly for the past two weeks.
The taskforce is made up of uniform officers and detectives who will investigate all complaints of illegal fireworks. Residents with complaints or tips may call EPD at 908-558-2111 or 2112. EPD has received many Facebook comments from residents who are tired of the disruption the fireworks have caused.
“I didn’t get much sleep for four nights because of this crap,” said Jennifer Burgos. The disruption caused by the fireworks is more than just an annoyance for many families.
“I was able to let some new neighbors from the block know in a respectful way to please stop...or at least around my house,” wrote one mother of a special needs child. “But I can't be going to other blocks behind mine asking this.”
State law says that New Jerseyans may not possess, buy or sell fireworks without a valid permit. Residents have also been complaining about how late into the night fireworks have been going off. But according to EPD there are no time constraints placed on legal fireworks.
