ELIZABETH, NJ - The Elmora Youth Little League (EYLL), became the first Elizabeth team since 1978 to represent the State of New Jersey in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Little League tournament. The EYLL team earned that bid when they defeated the Holbrook LL (10 to 7) in the NJ State Championship game on Sunday, July 28. The only other Union County teams to get this far are the Union LL team in 1976 and the Elizabeth Port LL in 1978.
The EYLL has been affiliated with Little League of Williamsport since 1999. The league was founded in 1974 and their original fields were in Union on the corner of Morris and North Ave. The site is now the location of the “Phil Rizzuto” park. In 1998, they moved to fields on Westfield Ave in Elizabeth. The City of Elizabeth named the fields after a former player who became a State Trooper. He was killed in the line of duty in 1992.
Most of the players have been playing EYLL since they were four. They came together playing Little League tournaments and in 2017 the boys won the 10-year-old Mid-Atlantic Region. “We are proud of the accomplishments of this group of players,” said Jairo Labrador, Team Manager. “We know that the other states have the same desire to earn a bid to the Little League World Series.” He continued, “We intend to give it our best effort and get the New Jersey team to Williamsport.”
The Mid-Atlantic regionals are held in Bristol, Connecticut at the Little League East Region Headquarters. The team will be staying at the facility for 7 days of baseball and other activities. EYLL will represent New Jersey against the other states in the Mid-Atlantic region. Their first game is against Pennsylvania on Sunday at 10 AM. The other states in the Mid-Atlantic are Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and DC.
