ELIZABETH, NJ – Mayor J. Christian Bollwage along with Councilwoman-At-Large Patricia Perkins-Auguste, Council President Manny Grova and Councilman Kevin Kiniery hosted the fourth annual Play Ball event in honor of Baseball Month in the City of Elizabeth.
As part of the U.S. Conference of Mayor's support of Major League Baseball’s “Play Ball” initiative, this event focused on the fun nature of baseball and encouraged widespread participation in baseball-related activities.
“Baseball is a sport that brings people of all ages together and unites us as a community,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “This event supports the city’s efforts to encourage physical fitness, the development of new skills as well as participation in positive activities. Play Ball is an enjoyable and rewarding experience and we are proud to partner with the U.S. Conference of Mayors on this initiative each year.”
Over 200 children participated in Play Ball, which took place at Hanratty Field on August 16, 2017. Mayors were encouraged to implement the initiative throughout cities with the goal of strengthening the connection between communities and the National Pastime. Beginning at 3:00 p.m. activities such as playing catch, running bases and the fundamentals of baseball were taught.
Following the recreational hour, two friendly baseball games were held by the girls and boys ten-years-old division of the Elmora Youth League. Teams were competing for the Mayor’s Trophy, which crowns the local champion league for the season. Families and friends left home with free t-shirts and hats.
“From working together as a team and promoting good sportsmanship to celebrating the outdoors, our fields and parks continue to provide opportunities for young people throughout our neighborhoods,” said Third Ward Councilman Kevin Kiniery. “This day was about trying something new, interacting and learning from peers as well as making memories that will last a lifetime.”
