SOUTH BRUNSWICK – A Saddle Brook teenager is dead after her vehicle hit a tree on Fresh Ponds Road Sunday night, police said.

According to published reports, the 16-year-old Saddle Brook High School junior has been identified as Brooke Costanzo.

A candlelight vigil in her memory will be held at Saddle Brook High School, 355 Mayhill St., 5-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 5.

She was traveling east in a 2012 Honda Pilot on Fresh Ponds Road near Selma Drive at 6:31 p.m. Sunday night, police said.

The car left the roadway on a curve and crashed into a tree.

The Monmouth Junction Fire Department responded to the scene and worked for 30 minutes to free the girl from the wreck, police said.

South Brunswick EMS and paramedics rushed the girl to Robert Wood University Hospital in New Brunswick where she died at 6 a.m. Monday morning, police said.

Fresh Ponds Road remained closed to traffic until 11 p.m. Sunday as police investigated the accident.

Police said that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the accident.

The South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating the crash.
