FAIR LAWN/GLEN ROCK, NJ - The Fair Lawn and Glen Rock Fire Departments will be hosting a Citizen’s Fire Academy, a six-week evening class beginning Oct. 2 that will give participants a chance to see what firefighting is all about.

The class is open to all Fair Lawn and Glen Rock residents ages 25 and older and people can request an application at cfa@fairlawnfire.org or at their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/FLGRCFA.

“Citizen’s Fire Academy will be all hands on, unlike demonstrations for the community that we sponsor throughout the year,” said Doug Sadowski, coordinator of the class and 30-year volunteer firefighter. “Participants will be in full firefighting gear and get a chance to operate some of the equipment and tools we use in a safe controlled environment. For people who have ever considered volunteering, it’s a great way to feel what so many firefighters experience every day.”

The class will cover engine company operations, truck company operations, motor vehicle extrication, and other routine tasks firefighters experience on calls.  The class is designed for people with a general interest firefighting and is also a great first step for people considering a longer-term commitment to volunteering for their local fire department.

“Over the last few years, Glen Rock and Fair Lawn Fire Departments have really strengthened our partnership and providing a pilot program like the Citizen’s Fire Academy is the next logical step,” said Fair Lawn Fire Chief Marc Palmieri. “The Fair Lawn Police Department has been offering a Citizen’s Police Academy for many years and we used that as our model.”

“The Citizen’s Fire Academy will give residents a better understanding of firefighting, and for some it may be a pathway to becoming a full-time volunteer,” added Glen Rock Fire Chief Tom Jennings. “It is our hope that interested citizens will take advantage of this opportunity and see just how rewarding it is to be a firefighter and help protect others in the community.”
