Countdown to the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce 5K: May 6

WALDWICK, NJ - Two weeks from Sunday is the 11th annual Chamber of Commerce Waldwick 5K and Race Director Stan Kowalski is psyched.

"We are ahead of last year’s entries at this time," he said. "200 runners and walkers pre-registered."

This does not include the 90-plus Bergen County Police Academy cadets and ROTC cadets running, and usually chanting the whole three-plus miles.

Especially fun this is year is the support of OutFront Media, which erected the Waldwick 5K Run digital billboard ads in four locations.

"You can’t miss them," Kowalski said. "They are bright red and yellow and can be seen at Route 17 Northbound in Rochelle Park, Route 4 east bound before Hackensack Avenue, and two on Route 80 in Saddle Brook."

Runners need to register as soon as possible to be guaranteed a goody bag, which go to the first 400 runners, and a race shirt. You can save money if you register before April 27.

What about the weather for that day?

"I don’t worry about the weather," Kowalski said. "It's a rain or shine event. As long as it doesn't snow, we'll be fine."

That would have been funny in other years, but not so humorous this year with the amount of cold weather and late snow storms.

"Two years ago, it rained and we still had over 400 runners and walkers cross the finish line," he said.

And what about those famous race shirts?

"We will have royal blue with white lettering short sleeve tech shirts this year," Kowalski said. "Guaranteed to all who register by April 27. Then, while supplies."

Also at the event is the usual party atmosphere that has made this race fun. There will be live music performed by the School of Rock, two DJ’s, a photo booth, Snapchat, and plenty of snacks and refreshments. The post race appreciation party is sponsored by the Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department in Borough Park.

There will be 15 bracket awards and prizes for the top two Waldwick finishers, a male and female. There will be money prizes to top the top three male and female finishers, in addition to a competitive team award and a team spirit award.
