FAIR LAWN, NJ - The "10K or You Die" Columbia Bank robber was captured yesterday in Paterson while walking near his residence, according to police. The robbery occurred on July 13.
On Aug. 1, police were able to identify and arrest Jose Cuevas, 22, of Paterson, on East 28th Street in Paterson after observing him walking near his residence.
According to police, a 27-inch machete was found on his person upon arrest. The proceeds from the robbery were not recovered.
Cuevas was charged with robbery, theft and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, then was sent to Bergen County Jail. His first appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack is scheduled for today, Aug. 2.
On July 13 at approximately 4:30 p.m., a shaken assistant branch manager at the Broadway Columbia Bank read a note handed to her by the robber. It read "10K or You Die." The robber, described as a dark-skinned male, grabbed his hip, making the woman believe he was holding a weapon. The robber was last seen fleeing on foot from the bank, until yesterday, with the $10,000 in proceeds.
