Local Equestrians to be Honored at USHJA Annual Meeting

LEXINGTON, KY — The United States Hunter Jumper Association announced the recipients of the 2017 annual awards, which will be presented at the USHJA Annual Meeting, presented by World Equestrian Center, in San Antonio, Texas, Dec. 12.

Kelly DeSaye  of Farmingdale, N.J. is the recipient of the Amateur Sportsmanship Award this year, created to recognize Amateur Owner and Adult Amateur exhibitors who display excellence and integrity by supporting fellow competitors and volunteering their time and resources to various aspects of the industry.

DeSaye embodies those characteristics with her positive attitude and enthusiasm, whether she is training at home or in the show ring. When she is not riding, she volunteers to help with fundraisers and raising awareness for the sport. She is involved with drug recovery programs and helping those in need in her community. She has a passion for helping animals and volunteers her time and money to assist animal shelters in her area and has adopted several dogs, pigs and a goat herself.

Created to recognize equestrians who have devoted their lives to teaching and mentoring riders beginning their education in the hunter/jumper discipline, the Jane Marshall Dillon Award will be presented to two recipients this year.

Donna Martin, the East recipient of the Jane Marshall Dillon Award, has been involved in the equine industry for more than 40 years. She originally became interested in horses, after suffering from Polio as a child where riding was a part of her therapy. She became a USEF licensed judge at age 25 and she continues to judge today at 71 years old. Martin started the riding program and Purnell Boarding School in Pottersville, N.J. and currently teaches two classes at Centenary University in Hackettsown, N.J., where she takes great pride in seeing her students progress. She is described as having an outstanding ability to coach and always promoting good horsemanship.

Madelyne Brymesser, 14, of Boiling Springs, PA, is this year's USHJA nominee for the US Equestrian Youth Sportsman's Award. When not competing in the Children's Hunters, schooling ponies, or riding for her school's IEA team, Brymesser volunteers her time in the barn, in her classroom and helping on her family's dairy farm. She is described by her teachers and trainer as a joy to be around, as being dedicated to both her schoolwork and horsemanship, and has a positive attitude that make her a great role model for her classmates and barn mates.

Kristen Vale-Mosack, the East Coast nominee, will be receiving this year's Vital Horse Show Staff Award, which honors the support staff of the sport whose current role is essential to the success of hunter/jumper competitions, is Following her mother's footsteps and working for HITS in the show office, Vale-Mosack oversees all of the secretaries when she works at various HITS venues across the country and is responsible for much of the overall operation of HITS in consultation with owner Tom Struzzieri. Working for Blenheim Equisports and Robert Ridland and Stephanie Wheeler for many years, Tepley plays a vital role in keeping the Blenheim show office organized. Referred to as the "go to" person, she is responsible for recording and organizing results, handing out pay sheets, and working closely with officials to ensure they have all of the information they need.

Other awards to be given during this year's USHJA Annual Meeting include the Dash for Cash Award, presented by RevitaVet Therapy Systems, President's Distinguished Service Awards and the USHJA Volunteer of the Year Award.

These award winners were selected by the USHJA Executive Committee based on the recommendation of the Awards Committee, which solicits nominations from the USHJA membership. Recipients of the awards, along with other USHJA awards, will be honored Dec. 12 during the Evening of Equestrians Awards Dinner, sponsored by USHJA Zone 7, at the USHJA Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
