Man Who Spit on Police Arrested for Burglary


FAIR LAWN - A Newark man who was arrested for burglary and resisting arrest, tried to grab officers gun belts and spit on multiple officers.

On Aug. 22 at 3:27 a.m., officers apprehended Mark Howard of 224 Sussex Ave., Newark, who was in possession of stolen property and burglary tools, according to a police report.

Police Officer Tiller Uriate was on patrol when he observed a suspicious male walking in the area of Bellair Avenue and 15th Street.

When police attempted to arrest the suspect, he pulled away and attempted to flee.

A struggle ensued, police said, and Howard attempted multiple times to grab officers' gun belts.

Howard spit on multiple officers on the scene and at police headquarters.  

Police determined Howard entered a vehicle on 17th Street and removed a wallet with the resident’s identification and $39.

Howard was charged with two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of burglary tools, burglary, theft, criminal mischief--causing damage to borough property, possession of a forged document--a Social Security Card, and throwing bodily fluids at a Law Enforcement Officer. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail.
