GLEN ROCK, NJ - The Robert Ax Award for 2018 (drum roll, please) – the 49th year of the award – went to Katherine Bennin, a Social Studies teacher at Glen Rock High School; and Tara Smith, a sixth-grade block teacher for Glen Rock Middle School.

The Robert Ax Award is given each June to both a Glen Rock High School and a Glen Rock Middle School teacher, selected by their peers.

The eponymous award was created in 1969 when Ax retired as principal of Glen Rock High School. At that time, he established the following criteria for selection of the winners: a teacher who has met the challenge of developing the full potential of the student… who aspires to teach with love, wisdom, patience and enthusiasm… and who regularly exhibits the qualities of personal integrity and dedication to Ax’s own teaching ideals.

The winners are kept secret, and the recipients do not know they have won until the names are revealed during the reading of brief biographies by the president of the Glen Rock Middle School/High School Home and School Association. Family members are invited to share in the celebration, but are sequestered in a back room, appearing only when the winners are announced.
