FAIR LAWN, NJ - A work dispute may have prompted a Saddle Brook man to damage a Plaza Road resident's Ring doorbell, police said.

The incident began on Nov. 7 when the Fair Lawn woman complained to police that her Ring doorbell had been damaged and the wi-fi wire to her residence had been cut. Ring doorbells typically connect to doorbells and can be monitored through video on smartphones.

According to Sergeant Brian Metzler, police said "a work dispute was the motive," although the details of the dispute were not revealed.

While police do not suspect there was a planned burglary or theft, they were able to identify the suspect, Michael Modzelewski, 64, of Saddle Brook using police surveillance equipment and arrested him on Nov. 19. He was released after being charged with criminal mischief.

"Although he covered himself from full view of the Ring doorbell, our own surveillance equipment helped break the case as they were able to see the suspect driving to and from the scene and were able to see him walking in that area," Metzler said.
