FAIR LAWN, NJ - When the country went into lockdown in an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, we all adopted various coping mechanisms, including a young woman from Fair Lawn, who took her nail polish hobby to another level.
Kayla Jeanne Addon, a lifetime Fair Lawn resident, has started a nail polish review channel on YouTube. The channel, called Kay Kay’s Nails, has at the time of this writing, racked up 125 loyal subscribers. Kayla, 26, who has autism, makes the videos with her sister, Kimberly, 24.
Kimberly is an occupational therapist (OT) who works with children with disabilities. Her role as an occupational therapist is to help her students develop skills to achieve daily tasks.
“A big part of OT is helping people find ways to spend their time productively and in meaningful ways,” Kimberly said. “When the quarantine started, Kayla was having a really hard time adjusting to her changing routine and all of the uncertainty surrounding her.
“Since I know how much she loves nails and nail polish and watching videos of other people doing nails, I came up with the idea of her making a video every week to give her a routine and something meaningful to do and look forward to, the same way I help my students find productive and healthy ways to spend their time and engage in school,” Kimberly said.
“We have a lot of fun making and editing the videos and it’s great to see Kayla having something to look forward to at the end of the week. Each week she gets better and better at the videos and gets more views and comments, but the most important thing to me is that she is enjoying herself.”
“My viewers like how I do my ‘swatch and reviews,’” Kayla said. “I tell the viewers what the polish for the week is and I read a description of it and talk about what collection it is from. Then, I start painting my nails. At the end, I show the finished look and ask the viewers a question based on the name of the polish or the theme of the week.”
Popular YouTuber, Phoebe Moon, with 17,800 subscribers on her YouTube channel, recently launched her own collection of nail polish, Moon Shine Mani. Moon has added Kayla to her public relations (PR) list.
“I read the PR sheet that she sends me about the collection and then I show the polishes in alphabetical order after reading their descriptions,” Kayla said. “I then paint my nails on just one hand because it’s a lot of colors to do at one time! I explain how many coats I put on my nails to get full opacity and I say my opinion about the colors and encourage other people to buy them.”
Kimberly is proud of her sister’s success. “This started as a small activity for us to do each weekend, and it is so crazy to me that she is getting all of these views on her videos and is even reviewing new nail polish collections being sent to her by nail polish designers!” she said.
“At the end of the day, what matters the most to me is that she is happy and learning and growing as a person, and I’m so proud of her for really going at this and getting more and more comfortable with each video she makes!”
