FAIR LAWN, NJ – Area residents are invited to an elegant evening of food and entertainment as the Fair Lawn and Glen Rock chapter of Relay For Life kicks off its fundraising season at the Violet Ball, Thursday, October 10 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at The Brownstone, 351 West Broadway in Paterson, N.J. Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS); Relay For Life is the organization’s signature fundraiser and a major community-wide program.
The Violet Ball will include music, dancing, recognition of cancer survivors and caregivers, door prizes, raffles and a silent auction. Guests will also learn about ACS-funded research and support services which are underwritten in large part by monies from Relays around the world. Dress is smart casual or cocktail attire and attendees are encouraged to add a splash of purple, the Relay theme color. Tickets are $75 each with early-bird pricing of $65 each and additional presale discounts for a pair by September 15; tickets are available online at https://RFLFL.Ticketspice.com/violetball.
“Relays are a significant source of income for ACS, enabling the organization to put as many dollars as possible toward its mission of finding a cure,” said Assunta Trischka of Fair Lawn, a co-leader of the Fair Lawn and Glen Rock chapter and Violet Ball co-host. “We are entering our fourth year and our goal is to nurture our Relay’s growth by reaching a larger audience with this special event.” Trischka’s chapter co-leader is Barbara Gomes of Glen Rock; she is co-hosting the Violet Ball with John Cosgrove, also of Fair Lawn.
Trischka and Cosgrove are hoping to expand awareness of Relay For Life among more area residents, merchants and civic organizations with the Violet Ball, in order to increase fundraising through sponsorships, donations and more teams that will participate. Even sponsors to date are: Academy Spine & Physical Therapy, LLC, Columbia Savings Bank, PediatriCare Associates, Simply You Hair Studio & Spa, and The Brownstone.
This fiscal year’s Relay will be held overnight on May 30-31, 2020 at Dobrow Athletic Complex on Harristown Road in Fair Lawn, on the Glen Rock border; each year the chapter alternates locations between the two towns. During Relay, team members take turns walking around a track continuously to signify that cancer never sleeps; teams also set up themed campsites and participants enjoy entertainment, games and activities throughout the 12-hour event.
Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers from the community. Individuals, families and local companies are encouraged to form teams to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. The chapter’s first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 10, 7:30 p.m. in the card room of the Fair Lawn Community Center; 10-10 20th Street; area residents are invited to attend and find out about volunteering opportunities.
