FAIR LAWN, NJ - The borough remembers the service of its veterans, and George McGinnis, Jr. is one of the many honored veterans who has a banner in the borough.

The Barrs and McGinnises lived in Fair Lawn for many years, according to family members. The family moved into the house on Floral Avenue which had been my a family home in 1955, and George McGinnis, Jr. lived there until his death in 2017.

George was a member of the 483rd Bombardment Group, a B-17 group that fought with the Fifteenth Air Force in Italy. He flew his first mission on October 10, 1944 and his last on April 20, 1945.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European Tour of Operations Ribbon with four Battle Stars. His group was also awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for a flight to Berlin, which was called the longest mission flown in Italy. He was discharged on November 12, 1945 as a first lieutenant.
