READINGTON, NJ – A township resident who reported a suspicious man kneeling in a driveway has resulted in the arrest of the man, who now faces a string of charges including aggravated assault on a police officer.

Police arrested Richard Destefano, 44, of Manville, who police said screamed profanities, charged at the resident, and damaged a mirror on the resident’s vehicle.

Destefano began to disrobe after he walked to the intersection of Central Avenue and Oldwick Road, police said, and he was still screaming profanities when they arrived.

Destefano was combative and aggressive and struck an officer in the face, according to police. He continued to fight while being placed under arrest and during administrative processing, police said.

In addition to the assault charge, Destefano was charged with resisting arrest, terroristic threats, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, defiant trespass, and criminal mischief.

Destefano was transported to an area hospital for treatment, and custody was transferred to the Hunterdon County Sheriff's Department. The investigation done and arrest made by Patrol Officer Jason Phares.
