RARITAN TWP., NJ – Officials here have scheduled a special meeting to be held Tuesday to discuss borrowing.

“Discussion of bond ordinances” is the only detail provided in the notice of the Township Committee meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building here.

Bonding has been discussed at recent Township Committee meetings. At the July 17 meeting, the group considered holding a non-binding bond referendum in November. It would have sought voter approval for the debt associated with the purchase of a $125,000 “command vehicle” for the Raritan Township Fire Company. It would replace the Chevrolet Suburban that the company is using now, which is about 10 years old.

The Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad is seeking a $260,000 rescue vehicle; the squad would pay about $200,000 of that cost.

At the time, Township Committee couldn’t get enough votes to approve the referendum.

To the editor:

I commend high school students around Hunterdon County for planning 17-minute walk-outs on March 14 in support of the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. This is an example of young citizens thinking for themselves and taking coordinated political action – a time-honored and respected duty of any thoughtful, responsible American citizen.
