FLEMINGTON, NJ – The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office has launched a criminal probe into a fatal ATV crash in Clinton Township.

The crash occurred on Kiceniuk Road around 9:20 p.m. July 28, police said. Driving the Polaris ATV was Christopher T. Rafano,  40, of Readington, who has already been charged with 12 offenses by Clinton Township Police Patrol Officer Jenn Petruziello. They include operating under the influence of liquor or drugs, careless driving, reckless driving, no liability insurance, leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury, failure to report an accident, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an ATV without a helmet, operating an ATV on a public street and operating a vehicle in an unsafe condition.

A passenger on the ATV, who was not wearing a helmet and who authorities have declined to identify, was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the road, according to a police report. The passenger was flown to Robert Wood Johnson with a head injury and later died, the report states.

Official records obtained by TAPinto show Rafano, who owns Sweet Melissa’s Patisserie on Payne Road in Clinton Township, was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center for treatment.

Assisting in the investigation, in addition to Petruziello, are Clinton Township Police Patrol Officers Christopher Ramos and Det. Sgt. Lawrence Anthes; and Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Detectives William Svard, Dean Cerdiera and Thomas Redfern.
