FLEMINGTON, NJ – The borough’s new beer garden – officially called the Flemington Filling Station – will open officially at 5 p.m. on Friday, with beer served by Central Wine Merchants and food offered by Grateful Bites.

The Filling Station also includes the Patio on Main Street, a child- and animal-friendly resource that can be used throughout the week.

The beer garden, transformed from the old Hineline garage by Lowe’s volunteers, will be open Fridays and Saturdays through July 30.

Although officials praised the new location, Borough Council President Brian Swingle called the Filling Station, “The tip of the iceberg” of what’s to come from the new Flemington Community Partnership.

“We’ve come a long way in a very short time,” said Swingle about the FCP, which council created after it voted to “de-designate” the board that previously ran Flemington’s business improvement district.

“The greatest improvement .. is the relationship” among its board members that Swingle called a “seismic improvement. A great foundation to build on.”

“Everyone on the board has one focus,” said Jim Gano of Crown Trophy. He is a former member of the old board and is now a member of the FCP board. “We have one mission: Put Flemington first.”

Gano said the FCP’s future achievements “will take time. This is not an overnight success.”

Lowe’s volunteers were the benefactors of a resolution approved by council last night. Officials praised store manager Joe Lloyd and Pete Staples for their efforts, but the pair credited fellow Lowe’s staffers Dave Murphy and John St. Clair for much of the effort.

“This is not work,” said Murphy, who like the other participants in the Lowe’s Heroes program are volunteers. “We love doing this.”

Mayor Phil Greiner said the project was the brainchild of FCP board member Judy Goodwin who not only conceived the idea, but organized those who actually did the work. Other volunteers included electrician Ernie Fletcher and staff from Unity Bank and Grateful Bites.
