FLEMINGTON, NJ – A borough man has been arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault.
The announcement by Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III follows a joint investigation by his Special Victims Unit and Flemington police, according to a press release.
Carlos Zacarias, 50, was arrested June 5, Kearns said. He was also charged with second-degree sexual assault; second-degree endangering the welfare of a child; and fourth-degree lewdness.
The investigation revealed the crimes took place between January and February of this year and involved a child under the age of 13, the release states. Zacarias is currently being held in the Somerset County Jail.
Kearns said the investigation is ongoing and asks anyone with additional information to call his Special Victims Unit at 908-788-1129.
“Our children are vulnerable to the exploits of predators and must be vigilantly watched and protected,” Kearns said. “Crimes involving children are a serious offense.”
If found guilty, Zacarias could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on the first-degree charge.
The press release was issued jointly by Kearns, his Chief of Detectives Frank R. Crisologo and Flemington Police Chief Jerry Rotella
