HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Hundreds of volunteers came to the Hillsborough YMCA Saturday and helped assemble 1,000 personal care packages for deployed US troops at the VIII annual Christmas packing sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hillsborough and Operation Shoebox New Jersey.

The packing began at 11:30 a.m. following a brief memorial service that honored the memory of US service members killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

Volunteers arrived with boxes and bags of donated items that were included in the care packages.

Volunteers packed gallon-size bags with toiletry items, food and snacks, along with socks, batteries, candy and cards and letters of well wishes to the troops.

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough presented a check for $2,000 to Operation Shoebox New Jersey to help pay postage for the care packages.

The care packages will be processed at Operation Shoebox New Jersey headquarters next week for shipment prior to Christmas and the holiday season.
