To the editor,
It was reported in the Post that on July 1 Gov. Phil Murphy signed the Bill A-5609 / S-3960 to increase the state tax deduction for honorably discharged and released veterans in New Jersey. This bill was sponsored by Democratic Legislators from Atlantic and Cumberland Counties. The bill passed unanimously in the Assembly and Senate.
Primary sponsors included Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and John Armato, both Democrats from Atlantic Count,y and Assemblymen Matthew Milam and Bruce Land Democrats, from Cape May, Atlantic, and Cumberland counties.
Sens. Paul Sarlo (Democrat Bergen) and Dawn Marie Addiego (Democrat Atlantic, Burlington, Camden) were primary sponsors.
Sen. Bob Andrzejczak Democrat Cape May, Atlantic, Cumberland was a co-sponsor
I urge everyone to to vote "yes" for Question #1 on Nov. 5. This will provide a property tax deduction for veterans in continuing care homes. Veterans are encouraged to take their $6,000 deduction on your state taxes. They've earned it.
Some individuals are claiming that these bills were presented and approved because this is an election year. The Assemblymen and state Senators sponsored and voted for these bills because it is the right thing to do to honor those individuals that have served this country. I am ashamed of anyone that uses these bills or the public question to take credit or discredit others . Politics and politicians have stooped to a new low when they have to use veterans as an election pawn. We were proud to serve and prouder yet to have served.
