FAR HILLS, N.J. — The six race undercard started with a work session for Far Hills Steeplechase stewards Reese Howard, Jr. Larry Curtis and Greg Morris.

Hudson River Farm's Snuggling, making his second lifetime start, crossed the line first in the $50,000 Gladstone Stakes for 3-year-olds under jockey Gerard Galligan. Menacing Dennis and Mark Watts were second, 2-1/2 lengths behind the leader. Down Royal and Bernie Dalton were third 7-1/2 lengths back.

Watts and Dalton immediately lodged a claim of foul against Galligan charging interference around the far turn as the field approached the 11th and final fence.

After a lengthy review of the videotapes, the stewards agreed with the complaints and disqualified Snuggling to third.

Menacing Dennis was declared the winner and Down Royal was placed second in the race of 2-1/8 miles over 11 National Fences that was run in 4:05-3/5ths over a firm turf course.

Harry E. Harris

Jocker Sean McDermott gunned DASH Stables' Whitman's Poetry to the front going to the final jump and kept the bay gelding to his task to win the $50,000 Harry E. Harris Sport of Kings Maiden, a race named for the late Somerset County horseman who served as huntsman for the Essex Fox Hounds.

Whitman's Poetry made his second start over National Fences a winning one getting the 2-1/8 miles in 4:40-3/5 on firm turf.

The French-bred Sixty Five and Ross Geraghty took second money ahead of Make Big Plans and Mark Watts.

Monkton, Md.'s Jack Fisher, who is the runaway leader for trainer-of-the-year honors, sent out Whitman's Poetry for the win.

Foxbrook Champion Hurdle

The Conference Partnership's Zanjabeel made his trip from Ireland to Far Hills a winning one when jockey Jack Kennedy “just couldn't hold him any more” and they charged to the front over the 13th and final fence and won the $100,000 Foxbrook Champion Hurdle presented by Peapack-Gladstone Bank.

The 2-1/2-mile race over 13 National Fences that is restricted to horses in their first and second years of steeplechasing attracted 11 entries.

Zanjabeel, who splits his time between flat and jump racing in Ireland, prepped for his trip to New Jersey with a seven furlong grass sprint in September.

Sprinter speed showed up when Zanjaeel, racing on Lasix for the first time seized the lead passing the six furlong marker ad went on to win by 4-3/4 lengths for trainer Gordon Elliott.

Fisher set out DASH's Ice It to be second with McDermott and New Member with Danny Mullins to be third.

Zanjabeel ran the 2-1/2 miles over 13 National Fences in 4:42-2/5 carrying 145 pounds to 156 for Ice It, the winner of Charleston's Queen's Cup during the Spring season.

The German-bred Lyonel won his second start in North America when he took the laurels in the $50,000 Appleton, a ratings handicap at 2-5/8-ths miles for Robert Kinsley and trainer Elizabeth Voss.

Doyle was aboard the six-year-old for the jockey's second win of the afternoon.

Peapack

Lady Blanco, racing for Amy Taylor Rowe and trainer Leslie Young, went flag fall to finish in the $75,000 Peapack, a filly and mare stake at 2-1/8 miles over 11 National Fences.

Paul Townsend, the Irish rider who finished fourth on Irv Naylor's Jamarjo in the Grand National, earned shipping money getting the distance in 4:02-2/5.

New Jersey Hunt Cup

Welcome Here Farm's Where's the Beef sat off the pace setter for 2-1/2 miles before making his move in the $50,000 New Jersey Hunt Cup, a 3-mile contest over timber fences.

Going down the back side, jockey Mark Beecher asked for more and got it as the 9-year-old Rockport Harbor gelding took the lead and scored for the second consecutive time over timber.

Beecher and Where's the Beef won the maiden special at Shawan Downs at the fall season's first traditional hunt meeting.
