FLEMINGTON, NJ – A Phillipsburg man has been arrested and charged with the sex assault of a child here.
Steven W. Newman, 50, was arrested yesterday, according to a press release from Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III and his Chief of Detectives, John J. Kuczynski.
The arrest followed an investigation by Kearns’ Special Victims Unit.
Newman was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree endangering the welfare of a child, and lewdness, a fourth degree crime.
The investigation revealed the victim was less than 13 years old and “the crimes occurred in Flemington Borough,” according to the statement.
“The guardians of children must always remain vigilant to the fact that those who sexually exploit children could be a trusted friend or family member,” Kearns said. “Continual communication with children under your care is imperative to keeping them safe and children should be taught about appropriate boundaries.”
Newman was lodged in Somerset County Jail and is awaiting his first court appearance.
Kearns said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit at 908-788-1129.
