To the editor:

I attended the J & J Landscape & Garden Center’s Pollination Party event in Raritan Township on Sept. 30.

The George family, owners and operators of J & J, have partnered with The Garden Club of New Jersey’s Butterflies & BeeGAP Committee in their new Project “Creating Pollinator Centers.”

The pollinator inspired presentation featured six pollinator signs listing necessary host/nectar/fruit/seed plants to grow our bird, bee and butterfly populations.

This “Pollinator” focus has changed J & J’s direction to eliminating harmful pesticides and herbicides and using an integrated pest management system utilizing organic methods and beneficial insects.

It was fascinating to see the baby Black Swallowtail Caterpillars on the Rue Plant. The Black Swallowtail was made the official NJ State Butterfly last year through the hard work of Raritan Township resident Jeannie Geremia.

I hope Raritan Township residents visit the Garden Center and learn more about planting friendly plants that will attract these pollinators.

I can’t wait to do some fall planting as it was definitely an inspirational evening. Plant it and they will come and make Raritan Township a welcoming location to visit and perhaps put down roots.
