The following letter was submitted to the Raritan Township Committee on September 18, 2019 in response to the disrespect Committeeman Louis Reiner has shown toward those of the Islamic faith.  The letter was signed by both the executive members of the Raritan Township Democratic Club and the Chair and Vice Chair of the Raritan Township Democratic County Committee.

Dear Sirs and Madam,

The recent statements by Committeeman Louis Reiner calling out Islam as a religion of violence and suggesting eradication by nuclear bombs crosses the line.  In an era when hateful speech is dividing our nation, it is reprehensible that a sitting committeeman would foment religious division using the rhetoric of far right extremist groups.

We call on Committeeman Reiner to retract his ugly rhetoric and apologize to Raritan Township’s Muslim community.

Time and again, our Committee has called for an increase in civil discourse and public engagement by our elected leaders that only comes from balance among our elected representatives. We call on the Raritan Township Committee, all of whom are Republicans, to rebuke his statements and ask for Committeeman Reiner’s resignation.  Committeeman Reiner said of his statements “It won’t upset Republicans. I’m an infidel.  And I’m proud of it.” It is in the hands of the Raritan Township Committee to begin the healing that the thoughtless words of Committeeman Reiner have brought to our community.

Sincerely,

Lois Zarish – Raritan Township Democratic Municipal Chair

Michael Drulis - Raritan Township Democratic Deputy Municipal Chair

Marianne Rampulla – Raritan Township Democratic Club President

John Mackay – Raritan Township Democratic Club Vice-President

Karen Becker – Raritan Township Democratic Club Secretary

Joseph Zarish - Raritan Township Democratic Club Treasurer
