FLEMINGTON, NJ – A man accused of firing multiple shots at local police has been indicted on two counts of attempted murder.
Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III announced of the indictment in a press release this morning.
Rafael Garcia, 74, of Mountainside, was indicted by the Hunterdon County Grand Jury on Thursday.
On Sept. 27 last year, two Readington police officers saw a vehicle parked on the eastbound shoulder of Route 22 in Whitehouse Station. While investigating the abandoned vehicle, the officers saw a man - later identified as Garcia - in a nearby field.
Police told Garcia to come out of the field, and that’s when he fired multiple shots at the officers, Kearns said.
Officers at the scene were able to place Garcia in custody without returning fire and were not injured during the encounter, Kearns said.
