For many years New Jersey folk music legend Spook Handy has been a local favorite in Flemington. He was a crowd favorite when he performed at packed shows at First Night Flemington and for outdoor concerts in Borough Park. His original songs in both catchy music and clever lyrics have been compared favorably to Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Tom Paxton.
Of late due to a scaled-down touring schedule related to the COVID19 pandemic, he turned his attention to civic engagement and getting people out to vote. “Elections have consequences, so VOTE!! And let your voice be heard,” shared Handy.
Handy is a nationally touring folk musician who performed dozens of times alongside folk music legend Pete Seeger in the last ten years of Seeger’s life. The two often sang Spook’s song “Vote!", which was one of Seeger's favorites. So, he got the idea to team up with some folk legends and produce a video, "to put together a star-studded video of the song that is both humorous and deadly serious."
Handy is joined on the video by folk music icons including Tom Paxton, Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul &
Mary fame), Christine Lavin, John McCutcheon, American blues artist Guy Davis, and two dozen nationally touring musicians - a healthy handful of whom are local to New Jersey. Handy has been one of the talent coordinators for the New Jersey Folk Festival, held annually at the Rutgers Campus in New Brunswick.
"I hope this video will put a smile on people’s faces and inspire them to feel good about voting rather than only how dire the situation is," finished Handy.
