State Police in Fatal Crash


LEBANON BOROUGH, NJ -  State Police announced today that they are investigating a fatal crash involving a marked troop car and a GMC Envoy.

Police said Trooper Emmanuel Gonzalo, 26, who is assigned to the Troop “B” Perryville Station barracks, was driving a marked Ford Crown Victoria State Police car west on Route 22 here around 7:57 a.m. Saturday. He had been dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Route 78 in nearby Union Township.

Based on the preliminary investigation, State Police said a GMC Envoy driven by Larry Helwig, 72, of Bridgewater, collided with Gonzalo’s cruiser at the intersection of Route 22 and Cokesbury Road.

Helwig died at the scene and was pronounced dead at 8:35 a.m. His passenger, Jane Roxbury, 67, of Lebanon, was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Gonzalo was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

Police said this information is preliminary and that the investigation remains ongoing.

There are those of us in Hunterdon County that are still without power almost one week past the first storm. JCP&L has repeatedly changed the time and date of restoration. The spokesman flat-out lied to you when he said all 10,000 customers in Hunterdon would have power restored by Wednesday at 10:30 p.m.
