FLEMINGTON, N.J. – When is the end of summer? Different people define it differently.
Astronomers tells us that summer officially ends at the autumnal equinox.
The equinox is when the hours of light and darkness are about the same. That happens when the sun is at its zenith – or directly above the equator. By that definition, summer in Hunterdon ends on Sept. 22. More specifically, at 9:54 p.m. that day, if you’re using Eastern Daylight Time and have a thing for astronomical precision.
For many kids, summer ends whenever they have to return to school.
Many others consider that summer ends after Labor Day. For many of them, it’s the last day of the year that they’ll wear white.
Meteorologists look at it differently, according to the National Weather Service. For them, summer ends in August.
Of course, that’s all just for the northern hemisphere. Everything is reversed for those who live south of the equator.
But here in Flemington, many consider the end of summer to be on the day of the season’s last car show. That’s tomorrow, Sept. 15.
The season’s final Flemington Main Street Car Show is also a makeup rain date for the Mopar and motorcycle feature. But all cars, trucks and motorcycles of every year, make and model are welcome.
The show will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. and is free for all to attend. There will be a DJ, live music and kids activities. There will also be trophies, including the season final People’s Choice Trophy 2018.
