Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder in June 23 Shooting

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP (SOMERSET COUNTY), NJ – A 21-year-old township resident has been charged with attempted murder and related charges in connection with a June 23 shooting on Reler Lane.

The suspect, Christopher Williams of Reler Lane, also faces charges of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose; second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and fourth-degree possession of a defaced handgun. Williams is lodged in the Somerset County Jail in Somerville pending a detention hearing, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

Police received a 911 call June 23 reporting a shooting in the area of Buildings 26 and 28 on Reler Lane. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit, as well as the Franklin Township Police Department Detective Bureau responded.

Their investigation revealed that a 23-year old resident of South Brunswick man reportedly approached a vehicle and was shot by the driver after an argument ensued. During the course of the investigation, the shooter was identified as Christopher Williams. 

On June 28 at 8:15 a.m. the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and tFranklin Township police executed a Superior Court-issued search warrant at Williams’ residence where he was taken into custody.  Detectives located and seized a handgun as a result of the search.
