Volunteer Firefighter Terminated by Township Officials

RARITAN TWP., NJ – Officials here terminated with little comment a volunteer firefighter this week.

Mayor Karen Gilbert said she voted in favor of the termination “with regret.”

Mark F. Bishop, 47, of the township and a member of the Raritan Township Fire Company, was arrested by police here last month. He was accused by Det. Scott Iglay with theft of gasoline from a township-owned pump, and charged with official misconduct and theft.

The vote on Tuesday by the Township Committee was unanimous, although Deputy Mayor Michael Mangin abstained. As a volunteer firefighter and member of the fire company, Mangin typically abstains from votes involving the group.

Bishop was the assistant chief of the Raritan Township Fire Company.
