To the editor:
While the nation continues to be torn apart politically and socially over the debate of the “Trump Wall” there are some facts that should be considered. To begin with, the “Trump Wall” will do nothing to stop the flow of illegal narcotics or human trafficking into the United States. Over 90 percent of illegal narcotics come through legal points of entry and the drugs not shipped through legal points of entry will come in via underground tunnels, as evidenced by the long history of the Sinaloa Cartel; or via sea, as evidenced by the long history of both the Cali and Medellin Cartels of Colombia.
The “Trump Wall” will also not stop undocumented immigrants from successfully entering the United States because the majority of undocumented immigrants here are visa-overstays. In fact, the majority of illegals here who are visa-overstays have exceeded the number of illegal crossings for seven straight years and the “Trump Wall” will do nothing to reverse that trend. For example, The Center for Migration Studies of New York released its findings for 2016-2017 and found people who overstayed their visas accounted for 62 percent of the newly undocumented, while 38 percent had crossed a border illegally.
Finally, when Trump says the “wall will keep out terrorists” he’s wrong on the the facts but history definitively proves this. When Algerian terrorist, Ahmed Ressam tried to enter the United States to launch terror attacks on New Year’s Eve 1999/New Year’s Day 2000 he tried to enter from the U.S.-Canada border into Seattle (oh, by the way, a legal point of entry as well). And for comparison purposes, a grand total of six known or suspected terrorists have been apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. Meanwhile, almost 100 known or suspected terrorists have been apprehended trying to enter the United States from the U.S.-Canadian border according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.
The ”Trump Wall” will not stop the majority of undocumented immigrants from entering the U.S., it will not stop the flow of drugs, and it will not make the United States safer from terrorists. It’s simply bad policy that needs to be prevented if we actually want to solve the problem of illegal immigration and truly make us “one nation.”
