To the editor:

In this day of sky high college tuition, tough competition and increased expectations of extra-curriclar activities on the part of high school students wanting to attend secondary education, Reserve Officers Training School, or ROTC, can be a great path forward.

There are many colleges and universities that offer ROTC programs. The commitment is usually one weekend per month, and then four years of service after graduation. The benefit is no student loans and great career training.

One excellent program is Navy ROTC at the University of Notre Dame. The US Navy and Notre Dame have a rich history. During World War II, Notre Dame was instrumental in helping the Navy achieve excellent results in its war effort.

Attending one of the US Military academies (West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, etc.) is another way to get a great college education fully paid for. If your student wishes to apply to one of them, seek a nomination from your new Congressman, Tom Malinowski.

Students can also seek assistance from their guidance counselor in applying to ROTC programs.

Good luck students!
