Raritan Valley Symphonic Band Presents 'The Ol’ West'

The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Christopher Sumner, presents its annual Pops Concert on Sunday, June 9 at 5 p.m.

The program will feature a variety of western-themed music, including selections from the epic film How the West Was Won, Canadian composer Howard Cable’s Snake Fence Country that includes several familiar western themes, Michael Story’s Rails West about the Puddle Jumper train in Missouri, and Carl Strommen’s Prairiesong, which beautifully relays the majesty and beauty of America’s heartland, including a lively hoedown section.

The RVSB will also perform John Barnes’ Trail of Tears, a tone poem describing the 150th anniversary of federal troops’ roundup of members of the “Five Civilized Indian Tribes” from the Southeastern U.S. and relocating them to present day Oklahoma. The dramatic last scene depicts the agony of the march with recitation of a mournful poem in the Cherokee language.

On a lighter side, the RVSB will perform Russell Alexander’s stirring march The Southerner and James Curnow’s Amber Waves of Grain, a symphonic rhapsody based on America the Beautiful.

This performance will be held at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, 600 Garretson Road. Admission is free.

The RVSB is a 60-plus member organization that has been delighting Central Jersey audiences for more than 35 years.
