FLEMINGTON, NJ - The Hunterdon Central Regional School District has also begun its foray into virtual learning, and so far things are progressing well, according to a letter from superintendent Jeffrey Moore.

Teachers are online for students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day, and are using Google Classrooms, Google sites and Google Hangouts to facilitate learning during the school closure. In addition, staff is monitoring emails and phones to ensure they are available when the community needs something.

"An extended school closure is a significant disruption, and we are all facing many other disruptions as well," Moore said in the letter. "These restrictions come from attempts to flatten the curve, in order to slow the spread of the virus."

Moore said that Gov. Phil Murphy ordered all schools closed on Monday, but did not give a specific duration for the closure.

"Although our original plan was to reassess with the Department of Health to see if we could reopen on March 30, we will now take our lead directly from the Office of the Governor," he said.

The district is providing a number of resources for families to discuss the coronavirus situation, as well as how to handle it and move forward.

"No matter who you are, someone is likely looking to you to see how you are reacting to all of this," he said in the letter. "Someone is counting on you to remain calm and focused, because it will help them remain calm and focused."

Moore said there are tips from the ADAA and CDC to talk and work through the current situation. For those looking for information on the disease itself, Moore recommended looking at information from the United States Centers for Disease Control, the Hunterdon County Department of Health and the New Jersey Department fo Health.

In addition, Moore said, the district will continue to post updates on the website, and will respond to phone calls and emails.

"Hunterdon Central is a special community, and it does not disappear in the coming weeks just because we will not be together on campus," he said. "Still, I must admit that the reality of being apart from our students is terribly jarring to me. We are built for, and have been focusing on, relationships in our work together. Our current crisis challenges this foundational premise."
