HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Heavy traffic on Route 206 can be exacerbating, but Wednesday's heavy downpours in the late afternoon and early evening made matters worse, with a stretch of the heavily-traveled state roadway backed up with storm runoff between Camplain Road and Brooks Boulevard.
Storm drains along the stretch of highway couldn't handle the volume of water,
Compounding the problem was the runoff from a storm canal in the Mid-State Logistics Center - formerly known as Veterans Industial Park - that ran over on to the highway on the western side before converging with stormwater running off from a construction site on the eastern side of the highway.
Several inches of stormwater the color of caramel covered both lanes of traffic and shoulders.
Police blocked off traffic at Camplain Road on the north bound lane as water gathered beneath the railroad trestle that crosses over Route 206. Drivers heading south were forced to turn around at the entrance to the Logistics Center and head north.
The temporary flooding eased by 8 p.m.
Hillsborough received 1.38 inches of rain on Wednesday, according to the New Jersey Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network.
