FLEMINGTON, NJ – A vehicle that police said Patrol Officer Greg Zytko stopped while driving on Route 31 for multiple reasons led police to arrest two men and seize six firearms, ammunition, a throwing axe and narcotics.
Zytko stopped the car around 2:40 p.m. April 14 for riding in the left lane of Route 31 while not passing vehicles, crossing over the double yellow line and having objects hanging from the rear-view mirror. The driver, Patrick Buhler, 29 of Mt. Bethel, Pa. and passenger Michael Daly, 28, also of Mt. Bethel, became “increasingly nervous” while questioned and Buhler was wearing a large knife on his belt, police said. The pair told police they were going to a shooting range and when asked if there were weapons in the vehicle, Buhler said there was a handgun under the seat, according to police.
With the assistance of Flemington Patrol Officer Frank Emanuele, police seized an uncased loaded 9mm Glock handgun from under the driver’s seat, according to police. After both men were detained, police said Buhler admitted that he had another handgun in his waistband, leading Zytko to recover a loaded two-shot .22 pistol loaded concealed inside the waistband holster.
Police deployed Zytko’s K-9 Jax, who indicated narcotics in the vehicle, police said. According to police, the following items were recovered:
- One container with suspected marijuana residue from the center console.
- One Remington 700 30-06 hunting rifle
- One Savage Mark 2 .22 rifle from within a gun case in the trunk.
- One Saiga 12, 12 gauge shotgun with collapsible stock
- One Century Arms RAS 47 AK Pistol assault rifle with a 30-round magazine, found within a guitar case.
Police said they also seized one switchblade knife; additional rifle magazines; three additional 10-round magazines for the 12 gauge shotgun; about 240 9mm cartridges; about 207 7.62 rifle cartridges; approximately 53 30-06 rifle cartridges; approximately 28 .22 target rounds; approximately 404 hollow point .22 cartridges; approximately 114 12 gauge target shotgun rounds; three 9mm hollow point cartridges; three 3 additional 16 round 9mm magazines; and a throwing axe.
Buhler was arrested and charged with possession of an assault firearm, large capacity magazines, possession of hollow point ammunition, unlawful possession of a handgun without a permit, possession of rifle and shotgun without a permit to purchase, possession of certain weapons, failure to maintain lane, failure to keep right, and obstructed windshield. Buhler was served on a summons complaint and he was released pending a court date.
Daly was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a switchblade knife. His charges also went on a summons and he was released pending a court date.
