NEWARK, NJ -- The Hunterdon Central boys basketball team went on the road and almost came away with an upset victory, but instead lost on a buzzer-beating shot by Newark East Side in the opening round of the Section 2, Group 4 state tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Junior swingman Brian Johansson scored 20 points for Hunterdon Central (18-9), which started its season 1-5 before recovering to go 17-3 in the 20 games leading up to its appearance in the state tournament.

Matt Ciszkowski scored nine points and Eric Molto finished with eight points for the Red Devils, whose hot 20-game stretch included a victory over Hackettstown in the championship game of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament last week. Gabriel Olaniyi led East Side (17-9) with 14 points.
