About the Citizens Club of Franklin Township:

The Citizens Club of Franklin Township Inc is a non-profit social organization that was organized in 1948 when African-American servicemen returned from the war with no place for a social outlet.  The men (Citizens Club), supported by their wives and the community, purchased property and in 1964 dedicated the building that they built at 55 Fuller Street, Somerset, NJ.  It is known throughout as "The Community Center."

The Community Center has served the community as a recreation center, daycare, credit union, Frederick Douglass Liberation Library, meeting place for masons and other organizations.  The building has been used for wedding and baby showers as well as for funeral repasts.  Currently, the Citizens Club of Franklin Township Inc facilitates "Storytime", a reading program for preschool to second-grade children, and is run by retired school teachers. Several rooms of the Center have been newly leased to the Mac Clubhouse, a daycare.
