SOMERVILLE, NJ - The Downtown Somerville Alliance kicked off the holiday shopping season Saturday with its annual "Shop Small" promotion, a salute to the merchants who are the backbone of the shopping and restaurant district.

Store traffic was brisk, sales were steady, and pedestrian traffic down Main Street and the Division Street pedestrian mall was helped by temperatures in the low 50s.

There were lines outside some stores for brief periods throughout the day as merchants and shoppers wearing masks were mindful of the social distancing protocols brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some shopkeepers set up tables outside their stores to display their merchandise.

Store windows were trimmed with a holiday theme, with dozens of Santas and Christmas trees signaling the start of the holiday season.
