NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - A fight at a party near Rutgers College Avenue Campus turned violent early Saturday morning, when a New Brunswick man at the party was shot in the shoulder, police said in a statement.

At around 1:30 a.m., a group of between eight and 10 African American males attempted to gain entry to a large Greek Life gathering on the 100 block of Hamilton Street, according to a preliminary investigation by the police, said New Brunswick Police Captain JT Miller.

After the group was denied entry, a fight broke out between the group and party guests, Miller said, which escalated to a brawl and made its way to the sidewalk in front an adjacent building.

Once the brawl started to wind down, Miller said, an African American man with shoulder length dreadlocks, between 5’7” and 5’9” and wearing a white baggy shirt and blue jeans pulled out a black handgun and fired two rounds into the crowd.

The group and the suspect then fled on foot down Hamilton Street towards Easton Avenue, Miller said. The shooting left one of the party guests, a 21-year-old New Brunswick man, shot in the shoulder, Miller said.

The victim was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The New Brunswick police are investigating the incident and ask that anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time to contact the New Brunswick Police Department Detective Bureau at 732-745-5217.
