SOMERSET, NJ – Families, friends and faculty filled the Franklin High School library on Wednesday to celebrate 10 senior athletes on their acceptance into collegiate athletic programs across the state and country.
Flanked by smiling family members, students signed commitments to continue their academic and athletic careers after graduation.
“This is a very big signing day for us,” Athletic Director Ken Margolin said. “We are very proud and very happy for our student-athletes. It’s always very exciting when we have athletes that can participate at the next level and can pursue their dreams both academically and athletically.”
Four of the graduating seniors will stay in New Jersey to play their respective sports: Zania May is headed to Rider University to participate on their track and field team; Diazjon Alexander will play football for William Paterson University; Chris Hill is bound for the banks of the Raritan River to run on the track and field team for Rutgers; and Brooke Sachau is heading to William Paterson University to play soccer.
Other students will be representing Franklin up and down the East Coast: Jordan Davis will play soccer for Immaculata University; Moravian College’s baseball team will add AJ Gordon to its roster; Dalen Merricks is headed to Springfield College to play football; American International College’s track and field team will feature Hasani Shingles next year; Isiah Solomon will play football for Morgan State University; and Luese Ufuah is on her way to Massachusetts to play basketball for Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
With all their children’s hard work paying off, parents of the soon-to-be college athletes marveled at the hard work on display yesterday.
Towanda May-Butts, Zania May’s mother, said: “We’re very excited and proud of her, she worked very hard all four years.”
Ann Marie Hill, whose son Chris Hill will be joining his brother on Rutgers University's cross country team and attending the business school at the college, said she was “proud of his accomplishments in academics as well.”
“He’s worked hard for this,” Chris Hill’s father, Bill Hill said. “And this is something he was hoping would come to fruition and since it did, it’s a nice thing.”
