FRANKLIN, NJ – For the third consecutive year, teachers across the U.S. and Canada were invited to apply for a chance to win a free VIP admission into the TCS NYC Marathon.

On a local front, Franklin High School's own Maggie Muir Shylock was among just 50 teachers selected by Tata Consultancy Services—the title sponsor of the marathon - to be part of this year's Team TCS Teachers. As part of the team, she will have the opportunity to take part in the 2020 TCS NYC Virtual Marathon.

“I am honored and thrilled beyond belief. It is an incredible opportunity to connect with so many talented teacher runners who share our passions with the opportunity to inspire our students," said Muir Shylock, a resident of Princeton who has taught 9th through 12th grade Spanish at Franklin High School since 2013.

Through the Team TCS Teachers competition, educators are offered the opportunity to participate in the TCS New York City Marathon as a sign of appreciation for their hard work and commitment to their students. According to a spokesperson for the program, 'TCS hopes to provide these teachers with a sense of community and empowerment, making them feel appreciated and proud of the important role that they play in children’s lives across America.'

Although this year's event will take place virtually due to the healthcare crisis, Muir Shylock has, since June, been preparing for the 26.2-mile marathon. She has been running as much as she can as well as cross training with yoga and cycling and focusing on nutrition and rest.

Muir Shylock describes herself as 'positive, energetic, engaging and a charismatic lover of life' and, when it comes to her students, said she inspires them the most by coming to work as her most positive and energetic self. As a non-native Spanish teacher, Muir Shylock also inspires students who are learning Spanish as an example of how through that same hard work, dedication and commitment they can become fluent as well.

"Hard work, dedication and motivation can help all of us achieve our goals, whether it be learning a language, mastering a content, or running a marathon," she said, noting that, as a member of Team TCS Teachers, her goal is to 'inspire' her students by 'proving they can do anything, including running a marathon, when they put in hard work, dedication and commitment to their goals.'

Muir Shylock initially began running in college to keep a friend company and although that friend quit after just two weeks, she remained a member of the Westminster College Cross Country Team for two years. She has also run with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and, after taking part in a few races with ACS DetermiNation, found she could give back even more by serving as a volunteer to help others reach their running and fundraising goals.

"I love running and helping others, and I am exceedingly fortunate to find the intersectionality between them both," she said.

Over the years, Muir Shylock has also shared her love for running with others and is dedicated to helping others reach their goals by assistance no then with training, offering advice and resources, or joining them in a race - whether it is a 5K or a half marathon. Additionally, to date, she has run 54 marathons, including six ultra-marathons, and is looking forward to adding the 2020 TCS NYC Virtual Marathon to her list of accomplishments.

With more than 100,000 runner applicants—and an acceptance rate of only 15 percent—the TCS NYC Marathon is one of the largest, most-exclusive, and most technologically-advanced races in the world. This year, the race is virtual with runners across the globe completing 26.2-miles, making this the world's largest virtual marathon.

"I am humbled by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that showcases two of my life’s loves; teaching and running," Muir Shylock said, adding,  "Running with this group has pushed me to be a stronger teacher and runner, not just for the other teachers in our group, but for our students who look up to us."
