FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ - The Somerset Community Action Program (SCAP) in partnership with the Week of the People Organizations (WOP) will host its 46th annual event at Naaman Williams Park on Saturday from 2 p.m to 7 p.m.
"Mr. Ted Taylor and Ms. Mamie Moore worked with key members of the community to create this family-friendly event 46 years ago in Franklin Township and we invite the public to help us celebrate “Community in Unity,” which is the longstanding theme of the Week of the People Organization," WOP President Percy Sanders said.
This event is focused on bringing about positive change by bringing families together before the start of a new school year. Back-to-School essentials will be provided to children in grades K-12, and many of our local community partners and supporters will be on hand to provide information and resources for parents.
This year WOP will partner with Grades4Life to kick-off the festivities with a Bike-A-Thon and Walk starting at 10 AM by Circling Naaman Williams Park’s track/path a number of times ending at 2 pm.
Activities will merge into the Back-to-School Event portion of the day with a plaque ceremony of the Naaman Williams Memorial Park (dedicated July 29, 1982). In recognition of Lieutenant Naaman Williams, Franklin Township Police Department’s first African American Police Officer, who served this Township from 1949 to 1976.
Aside from his many years of community service as a Police Officer and member of the Franklin Township Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 154, Naaman Williams was also a civic leader whose volunteer activities included being involved in church, professional and youth activities.
The rest of the program will be followed by other presentations and more activities and entertainment featuring LIVE!!! Xinos & Kudos, Jerseys Finest (dance team), Uncanny Models (mode/dance team), F.A.M.E. (dance team), Cess (singer), Spazz City (rapper), and much more. The event will also include food vendors, sport competitions, Pony Rides, a water slide and other activities and games to keep children busy and happy.
