SOMERSET, NJ - Franklin Township Baseball League's, 12 years and younger team will be "chasing all star dreams" in Cooperstown next week in an annual tournament. The team will leave today and return next Friday.
"There are teams from around the country that play in three separate tournaments," Trevor Moncrease, one of the team's coaches said. "We are going to the big one, it is called Cooperstown Dream Park, 104 teams from around the country will play. You will see a lot of California, Hawaii, and New Jersey teams. This is only the second year that Franklin has sent a team in the last 30 plus years."
Moncrease mentioned the team went a year ago under the leadership of coach Lonnie Booker, and he helped to lay the groundwork for the team to attend the tournament.
It is very expensive to participate in the tournament, it costs about $1,110 per kid for the week, and the total cost for the trip is close to $20,000.
Moncrease said the team "hustled to raise the money" they ran the concession stand, canned food, and received donations from local and national businesses.
Two parents who work with Bloomberg helped to secure a significant donation, and Piazza Orsillo, Moes, Roche, Kappa Alpha Psi, Lorraines Embroidery and Stop Shop also made contributions.
The league and many of its board members also made contributions for the trip.
The team also played tournaments to help raise money and to sharpen their skills. They played in the Hillsborough Memorial Day Tourney, Kearney 12U Battle, the Usabi Jersey Battle, Cal Ripken District 9 Tournament, South Brunswick Viking Tournament, and the Montgomery Covino Tournament.
The trip will not be all work for the team, as they will have an opportunity to socialize with other teams, visit the baseball hall of fame, and enjoy the arts and some music. One of the things many of the kids are looking most forward to is the trading of commemorative pins.
"Every team comes with a bunch of pins, we gave our team members about 75 pins each and they will trade with other kids from around the country," Moncrease said. "They will be up late at night trading pins, and building relationships with other players."
This season will mark the last time many of the players will play together on the smaller field before they move up. Some kids may not return because the big field does not support night games to fit their schedules, due to the lack of lights on the playing field.
