SOMERSET, NJ - A single small-caliber bullet was found on a hallway floor at Sampson G.Smith School Wednesday afternoon according to police.
While patrolling SGS as part of the School Safety Initiative program an officer from the Franklin Township Police Department was alerted at approximately 12:25 pm by school officials that a bullet had just been located, police say.
"As a result, they placed the school into a 'shelter in place' status," FTPD Lt. Phil Rizzo said in a statement. "An exhaustive search of the school was conducted by school officials with the assistance of numerous FTPD officers."
Police say no additional bullets or weapons were located.
The school remained in a “shelter in place” status while the search was conducted, police say.
The "shelter in place" was lifted at approximately 2:15 pm and students were dismissed from school, according to officials.
This is an ongoing investigation by FTPD detectives.
