SOMERSET, NJ - Deputy Mayor Carl R. A. Wright called on citizens of Franklin Township during this Tuesday's council meeting, to attend a town hall on community safety this Thursday.

"We have had a couple shootings, we've had a couple situations where violence has occurred and we need to get a handle on it," Wright said. "We need to understand where it is coming from and what we as ordinary citizens can do to help mitigate that violence."

The town hall will start at 7 p.m. and is sponsored by Pastor DeForest “Buster” Soaries, Jr., Deputy Mayor Carl Wright, and Franklin Township Chief of Police Lawrence W. Roberts.

The event is in response to the multiple shootings the township saw between April and May. The public is encouraged to attend to discuss ways to “put an end to violence in our community,” according to a township flyer.

"We look forward to meeting with the community to discuss these recent events,” Roberts said in a statement. “The men and woman of the Franklin Township Police Department are dedicated to the people of Franklin.  We cannot effectively do our jobs without the assistance and support of the community.  It's important that they understand some of the measures we have taken to combat and prevent incidents like this from occurring.  Additionally, this will give us an opportunity to hear, and address, the concerns of the public.  Roundtable discussions such as these will help to solidify the partnership between the Police Department and community."
